Stu
has often been known to sing choruses in public, including (with the
2005 production) all 14 Gilbert & Sullivan operas with three of
this area's companies. However, he is the first to admit that
performance is only a sideline to his love of music in general. Little
wonder he spends so much time listening, arranging, sound editing, and
navigating around stacks of printed music, recordings, and music
magazines. For the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester
County, he calls on his vast knowledge of classical music and
G&S when he devises quizzes and program notes. In an emergency
he may even be turned to use, like Princess Ida's brothers, as music
director or accompanist. Stu leads several bicycle tours each year and
served as newsletter editor for a local club for 19 years. He is the
author of two books on bicycling, one of which also drew on his
professional background in the sciences and computer simulation. An
advocate of a liberal arts education, Stu studied mathematics - and
music - at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he played
horn, sang with the choral society, joined Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and spent as much time in the photo darkroom
as in class.

| Stu's Personal Remarks:
|
Although it may not have the many decades of tradition that some other
companies do, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County
has established a reputation for excellent direction and performances
that few companies can match.
Though never nurtured in the lap
Of luxury, yet I
admonish you,
I am an intellectual chap,
And think of things
that would astonish you.
